Ron Shepherd Memorial Award
Posted: Friday, November 30, 2007 4:30 AM (PST)
I had to leave early from the AGM but I understand that this award was not presented and that members were going to be asked for nominations. Has this been done and have I missed it? I am in contact with Ron's wife, Val and his son, Tony. It would be nice to be able to let them know who was given the award this year. If nominations are still open them I'll nominate Bob Pringle who's suffered more than his share of injury this year yet still managed to take part in the World's. A close second would be Guy Wreggitt who likewise has had injuries but turns up at every club event to mark the course and bring the equippment. True Heroes!

Again I don't know whether this has been allocated but if it hasn't then I agree with Mick. Bob (Percy) would be a good selection and well deserved. Also Guy is always present at Club events helping out and another possibility would be Jon Middlebrook who is quite a back room boy but is happy to do his share sorting out the Westfield stuff and timekeeping. Sorry if it's already been allocated I don't want to speak out of turn but saw Mick's posting and agreed.

Folks,

Not sure what this award is awarded for? But if it is for selfless effort on behalf of the club, then Roger Kenyon, Andy Prichard, Maggie Watkins have all delivered in bucket loads, particularly to successfully deliver STC's first ever organised Hathersage Hilly Triathlon (as seen from my rookie year on the committee as Webmaster). If nothing else they (and probably others who weren't as visible to me) deserve a really big public thank you for their efforts. Cheers to you 3!

Thanks for this Mick. Bob and Guy are both heroes. My nomination would be  Guy. As you say he turns up at every club event with the equipment. He's great!

Its great that so many people have been nominated for the award - testimony to the hard work they've put in this year.

Although the Ron Shepherd award is given to the person who has done the most to promote triathlon, there is an understanding that the recipient should share Ron's humour, his great enthusiasm, and above all his irrepressible sense of the absurd. Last year, John Clarke was a worthy winner of the award, having these characteristics by the bucket full - read his emails!

My nomination lies outside of our hard working committee. I suggest Norman Harvey the motor bike riding, sexegenarian, vicar from Eckington.

My nomination would also be for Guy, who puts in so much behind- the-scenes work for the club. Also find Bob's nominee worthy of consideration - perhaps Norman should get his reward - or should that be award? - here on earth, before he gets to Heaven!

Norman once told me of his trip to Scotland to see family and complete the Gullane Beach triathlon. "I was last in the swimming" he added I vote for Norman, with Bob's sense of the absurd criteria. The irony of a scotsman in a rowing boat saying to Norman "you're doomed laddie" in the style of Private Frazer from Dad's Army would, I am sure, have made Ron laugh heartily

My vote would go to Guy on the basis of someone who has done a lot to promote Triathlon competition and Shef Tri club.

Hi,

I started all this off and it's seems to have lost it's way a little. I spoke to Maggie (the chair) a few weeks ago and offered to hopefully bring it to a finale. Considering the comments made about the award being for someone who exhorts others to participate, with a touch of madness thrown in. The shortlist must be Norman Harvey (the flying vicar) and Guy Wregghitt (the stalwart). I'll take votes on this thread with voting to close Sunday 23rd March. Please vote and encourage others too. I'll be seeing Val, Ron's widow, in the next few weeks and hope to be able to tell her who holds the award for this year. Make your vote count folks!

I agree with Maggie

Guy's commitment to the club cause put's us all (particularly me!) to shame.

Thank you for the kind things you have said about me.

Guy has my vote.  Like many of you I have seen him when life was less than kind to him.  He is an inspiration. I'm so glad to know him. He does loads of generous things for the club.

Norman.

Well that's it folks. It looks like Guy gets the rock (Ron's son Tony had a piece of rock that Ron had brought back from some far flung mountain top, mounted to make the trophy). Well done Guy. Just a word about the quality of his opponent, Norman - what a kind bloke to nominate his fellow runner for the award. Details of how the award is to be presented will follow. Thanks to everyone who took the time to vote.

Mick, Ron used to particularly enjoy the Fairholmes races. Maybe it would be fitting to have a little presentation at one of the upcoming events?
