2008 S. Yorks 5 Mile Road Race Series

Posted by on Thursday, April 03, 2008 (PST)

Tentatively suggested (email from Russell Atkinson) that 2008 events are - 16-Apr: Hayfield (Donny); 23-Apr: Penistone; 30-Apr: Dinnington; 14-May: Worsborough.

The South Yorkshire 5 mile Race Series consists of four 5-mile races is organised by the South Yorkshire Athletics Association. It's been suggested (email from Russell Atkinson) that 2008 events are:

16th April: Hayfield, Doncaster

23rd April: Penistone

30th April: Dinnington

14th May: Worsborough

These are tentative. When confirmed we'll put 'em in our events listing. Quoting Russell "Has anyone seen the S. Yorks 5 mile RR numbers yet?"

Cheers, Neil

The dates suggested are correct and all races start at 7:00 pm. I'll chase up the numbers with the race series organiser and I'll be around at the races to collect money, sort out numbers, results etc.

Directions to Dinnington Rugby Club
By Jon Senior on Friday, April 04, 2008 (PST)
I seem to post this every year - just hope it helps anyone who has avoided getting a sat nav. (From M1 - J31 Aston) Head towards Worksop A57. In about 1.5 miles, turn left at Red Lion Pub.(sp Dinington, Recycling Centre) After about a mile you come to a new roundabout (you have past South Yorkshire caravans on the left and there is a petrol station on the roundabout) Take the 3rd exit - go straight on for about 1/2 a mile past new hi-tec business units on both sides. Turn left at the Squirrel pub & go past Rother Valley College and Dinnington High School. If you get to Tesco's - you have missed the turn. At the top of that road there is a (NASTY) crossroads - Go straight on and Dinnington Rugby club is on the left about 300 yards down)

The 5 miler venues
By schamb34 on Tuesday, April 08, 2008 (PST)

Hi,

How do you actually find the start for the 5 milers? Do you have the postcodes or OS coords for the venues? I have not done these before and will be using a Tom Tom to find the races.

Thanks,

Steve

5 milers - directions
By bobpringle on Tuesday, April 08, 2008 (PST)

Thanks to Russell for SY 5 miler addresses etc. For those without Tom-Toms, I'll be posting directions to each from Sheffield about 3 days before each race. I'll be at each race to give out race numbers - last year £5 for the series of 4 races - good value, good atmosphere etc.

Hayfield 5 mile road race
By will bealby on Monday, April 14, 2008 (PST)

Bob has asked me to hand out numbers & collect money at the Hayfield race this Wednesday as he will now not be there.

Easiest route from Sheffield is onto the M18 until junction 3, follow the A18 anti-clockwise around Doncaster until the A638 turn towards Bessacarr & Bawtry, through Bessacarr and the turn for Hayfield is on the left, also signposted for Robin Hood Airport. The race is based at the Pub/Fishing lake complex which is down a lane on the left before you get into Hayfield village. I'll be there from about 18:30 with numbers (£6 for the series). I'll have some spare safety pins, but it would be good if people can bring their own.

5 Miler Addresses
By schamb34 on Monday, May 05, 2008 (PST)

Thanks Russell for the addresses and postcodes, these have made a real difference. I have managed to arrive at the first 3 events thus far without getting stressed and very lost, and risking the lives of other road users (driving and map reading do not work well together).

This is the first time that I have done the 5 milers and I can really recommend them. They are long enough to improve your VO2max, whilst recovering well for the next day. There are over 200 whippets at the 5 mile races and competition is tough, so it really makes you work hard. I have managed to get a 5 mile PB and a PB for the first Triathlon of the season (Horwich) thanks to this series!

Cheers,

Steve
