If you’re worried about your first Open Water Triathlon these are fantastic events to try out. There is a massive spread of abilities, from annoyingly fast young whippersnappers, through retired former swimmers and water polo players, to open water beginners.
The swim is in a river – so the flow makes it slightly chilly, but a normal swimming wetsuit will be fine for all but the most nesh! All races have an upstream portion (the 250m is usually all upstream) so you get slightly slower times than in lakes.
- The 500m and 1500m races start downstream – count your strokes downstream and add 50% to estimate the upstream count.
- If you suffer with the cold, get a neoprene hat to wear under the numbered swim cap provided.
- Get some Body Glide to prevent chafing around your neck and shoulders
- Make sure you’ve done a good land waarm up, you get in early in the wave to do your water warm up, and you really must get your head and face wet for several minutes before racing.
