Fairholmes Duathlon 2021

These ‘races’ are intended to supplement your training with race simulations to enable the practice of transitions and to raise the intensity of training for short workouts.

They are great for those new to the sport who would like to try out one discipline after another in a friendly club environment.

Guests can take part in the races. There is an additional fee of £2 for guests for each race to cover insurance (see costs below)

Minimum participation age: 16 on the 31st December 2021.

Cost: The price for individual races is £5 for STC club members, £7 for  non-STC members/GoTri participants.

Spectators: No. If you need someone to drive you to the venue they must remain in the car.

Water: there will be no water provided except in an emergency. You must bring your own.

Race starts from: 6.30pm near the Fairholmes Car Park (see map).  The start list and routes will be emailed to you the day before the event, please ensure you download or memorise this info as there will be no mobile signal at Fairholmes. 

Timing: You will receive a split times for the 1st run, bike and 2nd run. There will be no transition times. If you want these please use your own watches.

Race briefing: along with the start list you will receive details of any changes in road condition. Please ensure you are familiar with the route. There will be marshals at key turning points, however it is your responsibility not to get lost.

COVID Considerations: the full requirements will be laid out in the event information, however you must obey all social distancing requirements in-line with the current Government guidance: https://www.gov.uk/coronavirus

Equipment required: Helmet, bike lights – as this is an evening event and there is tree cover on the road NO LIGHTS OR HELMET NO RIDE, Bike, trainers, water bottle, safety pins, race belt (optional), exact change for carpark, pen, hand gel, face mask, pump, puncture repair kit, warm clothing for after.


Event Information

Arriving: Please don’t arrive more than 15 minutes before your start time, this will give you time to collect your number and rack you bike. Listen to marshals as to when you can enter transition to rack your bike as runners may already be on the course. Fastest runners will rack their bikes on the first racks as indicated on the plan and slower runners on the second racking. The racking will be marked so that we can ensure social distancing in transition. You may warm up away from the course on the track on the dam side of transition as indicated below. Please come to the start line across the grass 1 minute before your time and wait using the cones as queue markers to ensure social distancing.

There will be NO bag drop area, please leave anything you cannot carry on the bike in your car. Only bike shoes, helmet and bike in transition- no towels. 

Run Course (2.4km out-and-back) – same for each Run: You will start from the line marked on the map below. You will be set off at 30 second intervals with fastest going first as ranked by the times declared at booking. Keep left as you run out under the impressive dam wall, as others may be coming into transition as you start. Continue right round the bend then you will take the first left, up and back on your self – a marshal will be at this point – run along here until the first gate and then turn around and retrace your steps keeping to the left. All this running is on tarmac. Please maintain social distancing at all times.

Transition:

As you return from the run collect your bike from the racking. Push you bike clockwise around the roundabout until you cross the mount line. On your return you will place your bike on the back on the racking. Watch out for others coming in and out of transition. BEWARE this is a live roundabout, while traffic is minimal at this time of night there will be cars approaching the carpark and leaving via this roundabout. REMEMBER NO nudity. Bike Course (15km out-and-back): Mount your bike after the line. You will start to climb almost immediately up a short climb so start in an easy gear! Keep left as to follow the road out to Kings Tree, watch for severe level change caused by raised tarmac at approx. 0.7km in that will be marked on the road. There will be a marshal at the Kings Tree turn around point and you then retrace your ride back the way you came. You will need to dismount before the line at the bottom of the slope so please control your speed. Push your bike clockwise around the roundabout to the racking in transition. Rack your bike then head out on the run again.  REMEMBER No drafting is allowed.

BEWARE the road out to Kings tree is used by residents accessing their properties so please treat it as a live road. It also has a lot of tree cover which can create leaf and twig debris on the road.

After the event:

Please leave as soon as you have finished. Remember to remove and place you race number in the bucket provided. Collect your bike when marshals permit you to do so. Don’t stand in the carpark chatting. Participants found doing this or breaking any other COVID or club rules will be banned from participating again. Results and congratulations will be emailed to you within 24hrs.


COVID Considerations:

  • You will be given a start time and will be set off 30 seconds apart in a time trial format with fastest off first so as to minimise overtaking.
  • Hand sanitizer will be provided for you to use before and after signing in and racking your bike.
  • You will need to sign and collect you numbers from a table at Fairholmes Carpark please bring your own pins and pen.
  • By signing in you declare that you are free of any COVID symptoms.
  • Please wear a mask in carpark and up until start. Keep your mask securely on your person. 
  • Please take all rubbish home with you.
  • NO spitting or snotting
  • Please leave as soon as you have finished. Collecting your bike when marshals permit you to do so. Don’t stand in the carpark chatting. Participants found doing this or breaking any other COVID or club rules will be banned from participating again.
